Fair Housing

The Dayton Area Board of REALTORS® and the entire REALTOR® organization firmly support the principle of fair housing for all. REALTORS® in the Dayton area are fully committed to complying with the fair housing laws because there is no room in our profession for housing discrimination.

The federal fair housing law prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, familial status as defined in Section 4112.01 of the Revised Code, ancestry, military status as defined in that section, disability as defined in that section, or national origin. Ohio law actually goes one step further, prohibiting discrimination based on age. Additionally, many Ohio municipalities, including Dayton and surrounding communities, have approved local fair housing regulations. These, for example, prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex which includes gender, orientation and marital status.

Many local real estate brokers and sales associates are taking proactive steps to guard against housing discrimination. More and more are realizing they cannot remain "neutral" in situations involving any party who attempts to discriminate. Our organization supports programs to educate the public about the right to equal housing opportunities, and to educate the real estate industry about fair housing responsibilities. The best way to avoid potentially discriminatory situations is to be fully educated about the law's requirements. Awareness is the key.

If you would like more information on equal opportunity in housing, contact a member of the Dayton Area Board. Any REALTOR® can provide you with "What Everyone Should Know About Equal Opportunity in Housing," an informative brochure outlining fair housing laws and regulations.
