A FINE WINE AND FINE FRIENDS
wine tasting - june 22Last year more than 70 members mingled, sampled wine and food, and relaxed at Benham's Grove in Centerville for DABR's Wine Tasting event to support RPAC. Some of the comments about the event included, "you should do this every month" and "what a fun way to invest in RPAC". While we couldn't hold the event each month, we are pleased to announce that the Legislative/RPAC committee is once again inviting all members to Benham's Grove on June 22nd for another fun-filled evening!

This year, the wines of Tuscany will be featured, and hors d'oeuvres will be served that complement the selections. Don't drink wine? There will still be food and drink to enjoy, and this year we're including an auction with some fantastic items you can bid on. That, plus the friendly atmosphere, will keep everyone entertained. Space is limited, so click here and make your reservation today!

Harry VearnHarry Vearn, 2009 President
Dayton Area Board of REALTORS®

Whether you happen to be a politics junkie or not, it is a central focus for the National Association of REALTORS®, the Ohio Association of REALTORS®, and even here at the Dayton Area Board of REALTORS®. When I speak with members, many are surprised at how much REALTORS® help to shape local, state, and national policy. Locally, we fight some sign ordinances (so we can put up "open house" signs without getting fined), battle against higher transfer fees (as we fought not too long ago in Montgomery County) and support candidates who are sympathetic to the needs of homeowners. There's also much more done at the state and national level, but even then we can make a direct impact on how those state and national representatives of the real estate industry present a case.
This is exactly what the officers, directors, and passionate REALTORS® do several times a year when we travel to Columbus for state conferences and conventions. It's also what we do when a few of us travel to Washington, D.C. for legislative meetings. It's a rare chance to speak directly with the legislators and tell them exactly what issues are important to us. It was this type of interaction that brought about this year's $8,000 first-time homebuyer tax credit, for instance. We're already seeing a positive return from that.

Vearn and AustriaWhen I visited Washington, D.C. in May, I relayed to our congressmen and senators a few important policies that are key to the progress of REALTORS® and the housing sector. Some of these things were:

  • Preserve the mortgage interest deduction - more than 75% of homeowners use this deduction, and we oppose any change in the current law.
  • Tax credit - the $8,000 first-time homebuyer credit should be extended to all buyers.
  • Healthcare for small business - pass healthcare reform for self-employed and small businesses

We hope these and several other issues will be enacted, but at least we let our voice be heard.
McCuiston and TurnerAlso during the Washington trip, the NAR met to vote on issues within the organization. Those discussions are outlined here.

If you take interest in these types of exchanges with the associations and legislators, I encourage you to do two things. First, contribute to RPAC (a fun way to do this is by attending the upcoming wine tasting highlighted in the opposite column). Second, apply for a director position (also highlighted in this newsletter). This is a real learning experience and an opportunity to give back to your industry.
